The Best Ski Resorts in the French Alps for Families

untitled design (4)

Planning a family ski holiday is one of the most exciting things you can do — and one of the most complicated. You need a resort with the right terrain for beginners and intermediates, reliable ski school, good childcare options, safe village streets, and ideally some entertainment that doesn’t involve hurtling down a mountain.

France has an extraordinary range of ski resorts, and several stand out as genuinely exceptional for families. Here are the best, including our personal recommendation for families who want a relaxed, high-quality chalet experience.

What Makes a Ski Resort Family-Friendly?

Before diving in, it’s worth understanding what to look for when choosing a resort for a family ski trip:

  • Gentle beginner terrain close to the village — not a nerve-wracking drag lift at altitude
  • Quality ski school with experienced children’s instructors
  • Childcare and crèche for very young children (typically from 18 months)
  • Safe, pedestrian-friendly village without busy roads crossing the ski area
  • Non-ski activities for rest days or mixed-ability groups
  • Good value for money — family skiing is expensive, and costs add up quickly

With those factors in mind, let’s look at the best options in the French Alps.

1. Les Coches / La Plagne — The Paradiski Area

Our top pick for families

Les Coches is a small, purpose-built village sitting at 1450m in the Paradiski ski area. It’s connected to the vast La Plagne ski domain (225km of pistes) and, via the Vanoise Express cable car, to Les Arcs — giving access to 425km of pistes in total.

Why It’s Perfect for Families

The village is entirely car-free. Children can roam freely between the chalet and the slopes without the worry of traffic. The streets are wide, relatively flat, and designed around skiers and pedestrians.

The beginner slopes are genuinely brilliant. A long, wide blue run sweeps directly back into the village, making it easy for children to build confidence without being overwhelmed. There’s also a dedicated children’s snow garden in the village with magic carpet lifts.

Ski school is excellent. The ESF (École du Ski Français) in Les Coches has experienced children’s instructors and runs group lessons for ages 3+. Many families find that a week of lessons transforms their children’s skiing entirely.

La Plagne has over 130km of blue and green runs. For families where the adults are competent intermediates and the children are beginners or early improvers, La Plagne is one of the most accommodating ski areas in the Alps — you’re never short of terrain, and you’re never forced onto runs that are too challenging.

A catered chalet in Les Coches removes the daily stress. With breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner all taken care of, parents can spend more time enjoying the holiday and less time managing the logistics. Children love the cake at afternoon tea, and the chalet team can often help with babysitting arrangements.

2. Les Gets — Portes du Soleil

Best for: Younger children and first-time family skiers

Les Gets is a traditional Savoyard village in the Portes du Soleil ski area, connecting France and Switzerland with 650km of linked pistes. The village itself is charming — full of old farmhouses, a pretty church, and good restaurants — and it sits in a sheltered valley position that means it can be a few degrees warmer than higher-altitude resorts.

The skiing around Les Gets is predominantly blue and red, making it ideal for families where the adults are comfortable intermediates. The children’s ski school is highly regarded, and the village has a good range of non-ski activities including a snowpark for older children, an ice rink, and a range of sledging runs.

Watch out for: The Portes du Soleil area is large, and some of the linked terrain — particularly on the Swiss side — can be more challenging than the Les Gets-facing runs suggest. Make sure you plan routes carefully with young skiers in tow.

3. Avoriaz — Portes du Soleil

Best for: Car-free living and beginners

Avoriaz is one of the most unusual ski resorts in France — a fully pedestrianised, purpose-built village perched dramatically on a cliff above Morzine. No cars are allowed in the village at all; horses and sledges transport luggage from the car park to chalets.

The resort has a dedicated children’s zone called the Village des Enfants, run by Les Carroussel du Soleil. It’s specifically designed for young children learning to ski, with cartoon characters, gentle slopes, and wonderfully patient instructors. It’s one of the best children’s ski school operations in the French Alps.

The village architecture is quirky (some might say polarising), but families tend to love the completely car-free environment and the feeling of safety it creates.

4. Méribel — Les Trois Vallées

Best for: Families with mixed ability levels

Méribel sits at the heart of the Trois Vallées — at 600km, the world’s largest linked ski area. If you have a group where some members are strong skiers and others are beginners, this is an important consideration: experienced skiers can access Courchevel, Val Thorens, and Les Menuires, while beginners stick to the gentler slopes around Méribel village and Méribel Mottaret.

The village has a well-established British presence, meaning English is widely spoken, restaurants are familiar, and the ski school instructors often have excellent English-language skills. The terrain immediately around Méribel has plenty of beginner and intermediate terrain.

Watch out for: Méribel is one of the more expensive resorts in France. Accommodation, lift passes, and restaurants all carry a premium.

5. Les Menuires — Les Trois Vallées

Best for: Budget-conscious families who still want great skiing

Les Menuires is often overlooked in favour of its more glamorous neighbours, but it’s one of the best-value ski resorts in the French Alps — with full access to the Trois Vallées ski area. The terrain immediately around the resort is excellent for beginners and intermediates, and the lift pass price is noticeably lower than Méribel or Courchevel.

The resort has undergone significant investment in recent years, with new accommodation, improved lifts, and a better range of restaurants. It won’t win any prizes for village charm, but for families who want maximum skiing at minimum cost, it’s hard to beat.

6. Peisey-Vallandry / Les Arcs — Paradiski

Best for: More adventurous families

Peisey-Vallandry is the charming village alternative on the Les Arcs side of the Paradiski area — traditional Savoyard architecture, a genuine local feel, and access to the full Les Arcs ski domain (200km of pistes) as well as the Vanoise Express connection to La Plagne.

Les Arcs has a reputation for faster, more exciting terrain than La Plagne, with some excellent off-piste opportunities. For families where the adults are strong skiers and the children are progressing quickly, it offers an exciting step up.

Family Ski Holiday Tips

Book ski school early. Popular resorts fill up group lessons quickly, especially in peak weeks (February half-term and the first two weeks of the school Easter holidays). Book as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Consider a catered chalet. With young children especially, the elimination of cooking, shopping, and washing up transforms the holiday. You arrive back from the slopes to warm food and a clean chalet — priceless when you have tired, hungry children.

Don’t overdo it on day one. The altitude, the physical effort, and the excitement can exhaust children faster than they (or you) expect. Keep the first day short and build up gradually.

Pack more sun cream than you think you need. UV exposure at altitude is intense, and children burn faster than adults. Apply before you leave the chalet and carry some in a ski jacket pocket.
